17 – Tibetan Sand Mandala

Tibetan Sand Mandala in Progress
Tibetan Sand Mandala in Progress

If you ever have the opportunity to watch in person a Tibetan Sand Mandala being created, I highly recommend it. For them it is truly a meditation practice to create these exquisite works of art . It can take the monks 4-5 days to create.

They go through special training to learn how to draw the mandala and then “paint” it with sand…each metal tube is filled with fine color sand. The monks then continuously tap on the tube controlling the flow of sand from the tube onto the mandala surface.

I found this particular mandala on the Unitarian Universalist Church of Palo Alto, California web site. They posted several images of the 4-day long event in 2011 as the Tibetan progressed through making this particular sand painting.

When they complete the mandala, the monks perform a special ceremony, where they sweep up all the sand, reminding us that all life here on earth is temporary.

Here’s a time-lapse video I found on youtube that shows another sand mandala being created from beginning to end. Quite fascinating!

Happy Coloring!
