23-160 Embrace Your Future #6

Today’s Mandala Message: When it Comes to Forgiving Others…

This week I’m working through Principle #29 from Jack Canfield’s “The Success Principles” entitled “Complete your Past to Embrace the Future”. I set my intention today to ponder the idea of forgiving others without condoning their behavior or allowing it to continue.

I admit there’s a part of me that struggles with forgiving without it looking like I’m condoning. I’ve since learned of a powerful tool to use when it comes to forgiving others:

Turn it over to the Higher Power of your choosing (God, Spirit, Light, Source, Universe, Allah, Winnie the Pooh, Guides and Angels, etc) and ask Them: Please help me to see this person differently…or…Please help me to see this situation differently. And invariably, I’ll have a dream, a thought, or I’ll read something, talk to someone, or hear a line from a movie or song, that gives me the perspective I need to help me let go of the hurt, anger, resentment, etc. It could be that the person in question approaches me with what they’re going through, thus changing our perspective of them or the situation.

We all know, at least intellectually, that holding on to the resentment (grudge, hurt, etc) cause us to continue the suffering. The other person may have initiated it but we are the ones choosing to continue it. This fails to serve and/or support us in a positive way. It’s time for me, you, all of us to let go.

A good mindfulness practice is to ask to see the situation or the person(s) differently.

So how about you? Do you tend to have tunnel vision when it comes to holding onto resentments (and the like)? Are you open to seeing the person who harmed you from a different perspective? Are you willing to see the situation differently?

“The only thing
you sometimes
have control over
is perspective.
You don’t have control
over your situation.
But you have a choice
about how you view it.”
