23-177 Transform Your Self Talk #2

Today’s Mandala Message: Your thoughts affect your body

This week I’m working through Principle #32 from Jack Canfield’s “The Success Principles” entitled “Transform Your Inner Critic into an Inner Coach”. I set my intention today to ponder how my thoughts affect my body…positively and negatively. Canfield states: “Negative thoughts affect your body negatively—weakening you, making you sweat, and making you uptight. Positive thoughts affect your body in a positive way, making you more relaxed, centered, and alert. Positive thoughts will cause the secretion of endorphins in the brain and will reduce pain and increase pleasure.”

As long as I can remember and even now, my body seems to be in a constant state of hyper vigilance: tense, tight stomach and shoulders, with low-grade anxiety. I have yet to be aware of the thought(s) that create this constant state of fight-or-flight…it seems to be deep beneath the surface. It’s more like some deep-rooted limiting belief (which will be our focus next week) that requires no conscious thought it’s just there. It takes major mindfulness on my part to lower my shoulders, take a few deep breaths (which I’m doing as I write this), loosen my stomach and my jaw, and relax my posture. My hope is as I continue to go through this week’s MotDs I’ll gain more clarity.

A good mindfulness practice would be to notice your body’s reactions to your thoughts.

So how about you? Have you noticed how your thoughts affect your body? What do you notice when you have negative thoughts? What do you notice when you have positive thoughts?

“The happiness of your life
depends upon the quality
of your thoughts:
therefore, guard accordingly,
and take care that you entertain
no notions unsuitable to virtue
and reasonable nature.”
