Today’s Mandala Message: I am capable
This week I’m working through Principle #33 from Jack Canfield’s “The Success Principles” entitled “Transcend Your Limiting Beliefs”. I set my intention today to ponder the mantra “I am capable”. Canfield states: “ One of the most limiting beliefs apparent today is the notion that somehow we are not capable of accomplishing our goals. Despite the best educational materials available, and despite decades of recorded knowledge about how to accomplish any task, we somehow choose to say, instead, I can’t do that, I don’t know how. There’s no one to show me. I am not smart enough. And on and on.”
One major limiting belief that I have regarding my art is the belief that I can’t draw. I know that I am quite capable of drawing mandalas, I’ve been doing them for over 23 years. But if someone asked me to draw a dog for instance, I would immediately cringe inside and respond by saying I can’t draw dogs and that I struggle with drawing almost anything realistic.
The weird part is that when I was a kid and even into my teens I was a lot more confident and capable about my drawing skills. I’m not sure what happened between then and now. Either someone said something negative about one of my drawings or, more likely, I saw some other artist’s amazing drawings and felt inadequate by comparison. Thus I took on the belief that I can’t draw. Now is probably a good time to change that…you think?
From Jennifer Kunst on PsychologyToday.com “A sense of being capable is fundamentally an attitude. It is not about being the best, the strongest, or the smartest. It is more like the moral of the childhood story, “The Little Engine That Could.”” — How to Become More Capable
So Canfield suggests that “what if you decided to say, instead, I can do this. I am capable. Other people have accomplished this. If I don’t have the knowledge, there’s someone out there who can teach me.”
A good mindfulness practice would be to sit with the idea of being capable.
So how about you? Do you believe you are capable of accomplishing what you set out to do? If not, what limiting beliefs stand in your way? What would it take to override those beliefs?
“If we did

all the things
we are capable of,
we would literally
astound ourselves.”
