Today’s Mandala Message: Habits Determine Your Outcome
This week I’m working through Principle #34 from Jack Canfield’s “The Success Principles” entitled “Develop four new success habits a year”. I set my intention today to ponder the idea of creating success habits. Canfield states: “Your habits determine your outcomes. Successful people don’t just drift to the top. Getting there requires focused action, personal discipline, and lots of energy every day to make things happen.”
I know I have some habits that don’t serve me and I’m looking forward to whatever comes up this week to help me override them and hopefully help me figure out how to create more successful ones.
One thing I know about habits is that if you want to rid yourself of a habit, rather than try to deal with that habit directly it’s best to just create a brand new one to take the place of the old one. I also know from experience that when I do lock in a habit, it usually stays with me unless I decide to adjust it.
A great resource about all things habit-related is BG Fogg and his Tiny Habits. He advocates for associating a small “tiny habit” to an already existing one, basically piggy-backing on the existing habit. For instance if you wanted to create a new habit of always flossing after brushing your teeth, start out small by just flossing one tooth after brushing. Over time increase the number of teeth you floss; until eventually, flossing all of your teeth becomes a habit with teeth brushing.
A good mindfulness practice would be to contemplate the habits that support you.
So how about you? What habits do you have that you deem success oriented? What habits are to your detriment? Do you tend to resist creating habits or embrace them?
“The habits you develop
— Jack Canfield
from this day forward
will ultimately determine
how your future unfolds.”
