23-245 Say Yes to No #7

Today’s Mandala Message: Test the Waters

This week I’m working through Principles #42 and #43 from Jack Canfield’s “The Success Principles” entitled “Just Say No!” and “Say No to the Good so That you Can Say Yes to the Great” respectively. I set my intention today to continue to ponder what’s truly great versus what’s just good. Canfield offers a four-step process to help determine what’s truly great. I shared step one yesterday.

Step Two: “Talk to advisors about this potential pursuit” Especially anyone who has done something along the lines of what you’re wanting to do.

Step Three: “Test the Waters” Rather than jump in 100%, try a small test or a smaller version of it. For instance rather than writing a whole book, try writing an essay or short story.

Step Four: “Look Where You Spend Your Time” Determine if the activities you’re doing support you achieving your goals.

I have to admit, I tend to jump into the deep end when a new idea or opportunity comes my way. For instance, right now rather than create just one oracle deck, I’m creating five of them. Granted each of the five decks contain 73 different images of last year’s mandalas of the day (5×73=365), so it makes sense on one level…on another…five decks? Really?

On the subject of seeking the advice of an advisor, I struggle with finding someone who is into mandalas, has created oracle decks, has created coloring books, and does readings. Some of my friends that I seek advice from tend to think I’m doing too much (or question my sanity)…they may be right and yet I’m feeling a strong pull in all of these directions.

All that being said, I did happen to meet someone last week who meets two of those criteria. I plan to reach out to her for a get-together for sometime next week. And she’s from France…I’ve also been looking for someone I can speak French with, one-on-one. So there is that opportunity too.

A good mindfulness practice would be to consider a way to test the waters with a smaller “version” of your goal.

So how about you? How are you with testing an idea before jumping in with both feet? Do you know someone who could act as an advisor who has done something similar to what you’re wanting to create?

“A mentor is someone
who sees more talent
and ability within you,
than you see in yourself,
and helps bring it out of you.”
