Today’s Mandala Message: Do Your Homework
This week I’m working through Principles #44 and #45 from Jack Canfield’s “The Success Principles” entitled “Find a Wing to Climb Under” and “Hire a Personal Coach” respectively. I set my intention today to ponder and identify what I would need in a mentor. Canfield states: “Look for mentors who have the kind of well-rounded experience you need to tackle your goal. When you start seeing a pattern of the same few people being recommended, you know you’ve identified your short list of possible mentors.”
As part of doing the research we need to know what we’re looking for in a mentor. Do you need someone to “open doors” for you? Do you need a technical expert? Do you need validation of the path you’re on right now? All valid questions that I have yet to give time to answer…as yet. So let me do it right now…as I’m writing this post in real time. First I’ll start with listing the areas where I could use some help with my business (The Mandala Lady):
- web site
- marketing
- podcasting
- zoom-inars
- social media
- selling my art
- publishing my oracle decks
- publishing my coloring books
- public speaking for storytelling
- improving on my intuitive/psychic/channeling abilities
- administrative (bookkeeping, inventory, scheduling, and so on)
Ok, so now that I look at this list, I pretty much need help with everything! Much of it I’m already doing to some degree on my own (website, social media, self-published coloring books, have sold some of my art, was a member of Toastmasters in the 90s, and some administrative stuff). I need help enhancing and improving all of these areas so that I can reach and attract a broader audience.
In my head I’m thinking that I doubt one person could help me with doing all of what’s on my list. However I might be able to find one person who can help guide me through them. Someone who can help me
- clarify my brand/message/what I’m about
- create a plan of action
- figure out what things I can do and what things I can delegate
- see the bigger picture, giving me a broader perspective on my offerings
- gain clarity on my “why”
And just as important, I would need someone who is like-minded and spirit-minded. Tall order indeed.
Now that I’ve put this all in writing, I can see where I have a clearer picture of what I need. It will also help me better discern the most appropriate mentor for me. From the list presented in the quote below, I would say I prefer the mentor who inspires. It could also be, that based on my list, I may be more in need of a coach than a mentor…semantics?
A good mindfulness practice would be to ponder who you would want as a mentor and what kind of help would you want from them.
So how about you? Have you given serious consideration as to what areas of your life or work/job/business could use some help? What type of mentor would work best for you? Would you need more than one?
“The mediocre mentor tells.
— Lucia Ballas Traynor
The good mentor explains.
The superior mentor demonstrates.
The greatest mentors inspire!”
