Today’s Mandala Message: Be Open to Advice
This week I’m working through Principles #44 and #45 from Jack Canfield’s “The Success Principles” entitled “Find a Wing to Climb Under” and “Hire a Personal Coach” respectively. I set my intention today to ponder being receptive to advice…as well as following through on it. Canfield states: “Mentors don’t like to have their time wasted. When you seek out their advice…follow it. Study their methods, ask your questions, make sure you understand the process—then, as much as is humanly possible, duplicate your mentors’ efforts. You may even be able to improve on them.”
I admit that sometimes the only advice I’m open to receiving is from people I respect, people I feel have the expertise to give it, and/or people for whom I’ve asked. Of late I’ve become more open to it because I have found that people can surprise you with their perspective or take on things. I may not totally agree with it and yet it may spark a new idea that I wouldn’t have thought of had I not been open in the first place.
As for following through…that’s usually a different story and it doesn’t necessarily reflect on where the advice came but more on my reaction to it: does it trigger my fears? does it seem too overwhelming? is it practical for me right now? Just yesterday someone advise on an online class that could help me with my website. Initially it seemed like a great idea but then I saw that it doesn’t start until next February, it takes almost all year, and it has the potential of requiring a lot of time and effort on my part. Is that REALLY the best use of my time, effort, and abilities? Right now I’m leaning more towards paying for someone to update my site so that I can focus on my art and be able to do more readings.
A good mindfulness practice would be to monitor how advice comes to you and how you respond to it.
So how about you? When you receive advice do you welcome it? Do you follow through on it? Does it depend on who’s giving the advice?
“Many receive advice,

only the wise profit from it.”
