Today’s Mandala Message: Consider Assembling a Mastermind Group

This week I’m working through Principle #46 from Jack Canfield’s “The Success Principles” entitled “Mastermind Your Way to Success”. I set my intention today to ponder the idea of assembling a mastermind group. Canfield states: “Regardless of its purpose, the key is to choose people who are already where you’d like to be in your life—or at least a level above you. … If you’re concerned that people who are already achieving at a higher level than you might not want to be involved in a group with you, remember that you’re the one facilitating the meeting. … They’d probably be delighted to mastermind with the other people you’re going to invite.”

I equate Canfield’s suggestion to an idea I heard decades ago involving tennis: “If you want to be a better tennis play, play with better tennis players.” At certain times in my life I’ve left groups for that very reason…not so much that I thought I was better than the others, but that they were opting to stay small and opting out of getting bigger and better.

That being said…I have to admit the thought of inviting people together that are where I’d like to be or at a level higher, intimidates me. The very concern Canfield mentions about people not wanting to “drop down” to my level, is exactly what stops me. Even so, I’m always on the lookout for anyone a few or more steps ahead of me and who is willing and open to connecting with me.

Along the same lines, I’m seriously considering getting back into Toastmasters (I belonged to a group in the 90s). While technically not a mastermind group, they do meet weekly and they are definitely all about learning and growing.

SIDEBAR: “The Success Principles” was first published in the early 2000s and some of what he shares and suggests might be little outdated by today’s culture and society. Here in 2023, I’m not so sure people are as open to meeting weekly (virtually or physically) as they may have been in the past. I’m lucky to have found two people who are open to meeting weekly but getting five or six together seems a bit more challenging. What I am been finding are groups that meet maybe once or twice a month. For me, I like the idea of meeting weekly.

A good mindfulness practice would be to contemplate who you may know of that’s already where you’d like to be in your life.

So how about you? Are you interested in starting a mastermind group of your own? Would it meet physically or virtually? How often would you want to meet?

“In the best mastermind groups,
people come together
with like-minded goals and values
to offer and obtain feedback,
discuss personal
and professional experiences,
and to have a safe place
to tackle issues and problems
that they contend with.”
