Today’s Mandala Message: Be Fully Present

This week I’m working through Principle #48 from Jack Canfield’s “The Success Principles” entitled “Be Hear Now”. I set my intention today to ponder being fully present when listening.

From an article posted on VeryWellMind.com about being present, they state: “Active listening requires being fully present in the conversation. … Being present involves listening with all your senses (sight, sound, etc.) and giving your full attention to the speaker. … [P]ut away your cell phone, ignore distractions, avoid daydreaming, and shut down your internal dialogue. Place your focus on your conversation partner and let everything else slip away.”

I admit if I’m in a situation where I am stressed or have stuff that needs to get done or anything like that, I have a difficult time focusing on what someone else is saying. I’ll usually want them to hurry up, get to the point, and so on. Definitely not good active listening; definitely not good connecting skills.

I know enough now that if someone wants to spend some time talking, I will stop what I’m doing (set it aside), or if I think I won’t be able to be fully present, I’ll ask to schedule a later time to meet that works for both of us…at least for me, where I can more readily focus.

A good mindfulness practice would be to breathe into being fully present in order to fully listen.

So how about you? Are you able to give your full attention to others when they’re speaking? Do you tend to be distracted when others talk? Would learning some mindfulness practices help you to be more present with others?

The point of power is always
in the present moment.
