Today’s Mandala Message: Withhold Judgement

This week I’m working through Principle #48 from Jack Canfield’s “The Success Principles” entitled “Be Hear Now”. I set my intention today to ponder remaining neutral while listening to others.

From an article posted on VeryWellMind.com about withholding judgement, they state: “Remaining neutral and non-judgmental in your responses enables the other person to feel comfortable with sharing their thoughts. It makes the conversation a safe zone where they can trust that they won’t be shamed, criticized, blamed, or otherwise negatively received.

I find it easier to remain neutral when I don’t have any attachment to the person who is speaking. When it’s someone I care about, who I’ve known for some time, it’s more difficult to withhold judgement. It’s because I care that I tend to want to fix them, take care of them, and/or make sure they won’t get hurt in any way. Another aspect of this is that when I am being judgmental it’s because I’m vicariously putting myself in their shoes and it triggers my fears which I in turn reflect back onto them. Upon reflection, I realize I’ll need to practice this “withhold judgement” concept more often especially with those close to me. I also realize that because I have experienced judgement from others, I tend to hold back on sharing anything with others…until I know it’s safe to do so.

A good mindfulness practice would be to practice remaining neutral while listening.

So how about you? While listening to others, are you already judging what they are saying? What does your body language “say”? Are you able to just listen while remaining neutral?

“Sometimes,
all you need
is someone who will listen.
It is fortune enough
to have people around
who hear you
& not judge you.”
