Today’s Mandala Message: Know Your Type of Appreciation
This week I’m working through Principle #53 “Practice Uncommon Appreciation”. I set my intention today to ponder the three different types of appreciation. Canfield states: “It’s valuable to make a distinction between three different kinds of appreciation—auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. … Auditory people need to hear it, visual people need to see it, and kinesthetic people need to feel it.” Do you know how the people around like to receive appreciation? Just as important, do you know how you like to receive appreciation?
Even though I tend to be more vision-oriented with my art and my intuitive readings, I’m an auditory type when it comes to receiving appreciation. I think it’s because throughout my childhood I so wanted to hear that I was appreciated and rarely heard it; which may explain my over-achiever mindset as an adult: “Maybe this time if the do this over-the-top fantastic thing, someone will tell me how much they appreciate it.” or “Maybe if I do things absolutely perfectly, I’ll receive some verbal acknowledgement .” Until I wrote this paragraph just now, I didn’t realize I had this mindset…at least not consciously. Now that I know, I can heal my need to be an over-achiever.
A good mindfulness practice would be to ponder how you would like people to express appreciation to you.
So how about you? Do you prefer a hug or handshake as a show of someone’s appreciation of you? Do you prefer to hear others say to you that they appreciate you and/or what you did/do? Do you prefer to see that you are appreciated via some physical representation: a card, letter, certificate, a gift, etc.?

more of the things
that you appreciate
and value into your life.”
