Today’s Mandala Message: Every Agreement is About You
This week I’m working through Principle #54 “Keep Your Agreements”. I set my intention today to ponder how every agreement is about me. Canfield states: “[E]very agreement you make is ultimately with yourself. Even when you are making an agreement with someone else, your brain hears it and registers it as a commitment. You are making an agreement with yourself to do something, and when you don’t follow through, you learn to distrust yourself. The result is a loss of self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-respect. You lose faith in your ability to produce a result. You weaken your sense of integrity.” Yikes! When you put it that way…I hadn’t thought of agreements in that light. This changes everything.
I admit that I don’t always take my agreements as seriously as I should. If it involves money, I do; but not so much as I should with other agreements. This is making me realize that I’ve been ignoring working on someone’s web site that I promised I would do. I really don’t want to do it because I know it will be time consuming and there always some issues with the content others supply to me for it, making it an even longer process than necessary.
But now that I’m addressing this principle today, I realize that I volunteer to do this web site and I need to honor that agreement. This principle is also making me realize that I need to take all of my agreements more seriously. This is one of those things where I’m embarrassed to learn this about myself and at the same time by bringing to my attention, it’s giving me the opportunity to improve my ways. It’s also making me realize that before I jump into any future agreements, I need to be absolutely sure that I can fulfill them, otherwise it’s better I decline to accept them in the first place.
A good mindfulness practice would be to notice which agreements you’re honoring and which ones you’re ignoring.
So how about you? How are you with your agreements? What agreements do you tend to successfully follow through on? Which ones do you tend to put off?
