23-303 Agreements #2

Today’s Mandala Message: Your Integrity Matters

This week I’m working through Principle #54 “Keep Your Agreements”. I set my intention today to ponder my integrity when it comes to agreements. Canfield states: “When you realize how important your integrity and self-esteem really are, you will stop making casual agreements just to get someone off your back. … You won’t make agreements you don’t intend to keep. You will make fewer agreements and you will do whatever it takes to keep them up. … If you want more self-esteem, self-confidence, self-respect, personal power, mental clarity, and energy, then you’ll make keeping your word more important.”

Up until now, I had not made the association of “keeping my agreements” with my self-esteem, self-confidence, self-respect, personal power, mental clarity, and energy. I do know that I feel good about myself when I complete something I agreed to do, mainly, I thought, it was because I was glad that I got it done. I didn’t realize that this also fed into my self-esteem, etc.

Canfield offers some tips on making and keeping agreements, today I want to share #2: “write down all the agreements you make”. I realize he’s talking about from now on but I can see the value in noting all of my current agreements. Except for one or two of them being for other people, most of my agreements are with myself. That’s the list I truly need to create and assess. I break more promises to myself than I do for all others combined! Why do I do that? Am I not worthy of keeping my agreements with myself? Hmm…I will have to ponder that one.

A good mindfulness practice would be to ponder how many agreements you have right now that you have yet do complete.

So how about you? Do you know how many agreements you have going right now? How many are with other people? How many are with yourself? How do you feel about putting them in writing?

“Keep every promise you make
and only make promises
you can keep.”
