23-308 Agreements #7

Today’s Mandala Message: Write it Down

This week I’m working through Principle #54 “Keep Your Agreements”. I set my intention today to ponder writing down my agreements…especially the ones to myself. From LeadingWithHonor.com they offer some tips on being better with keeping your promises (aka agreements). Tip #4 got my attention the most: “Write Commitments Down Immediately. Assign them a realistic completion date on your to- do list or calendar.

I tend to _NOT_ write them down especially the ones to myself. I don’t seem to make them as important as my agreements to others. I’m embarrassed to say that currently I have about 50 online courses that I have paid for and have yet to complete…or worse…I haven’t even started. A while back on my ipad I documented all these classes, printed the list, and put them in a folder. I’m not sure I could tell you where that folder is right now. I need a better system which also needs to include assigning a completion date on a calendar. More importantly I need to allow myself to honor myself and the commitments I make to myself.

I find I do much better with hand-written lists that I can readily see, versus hidden in a digital or manila folder. So tomorrow I plan to itemize all these classes and put them on a physical calendar. I find I have a greater sense of things if I can see it in analog form and in plain view.

A good mindfulness practice would be to ponder how honoring your agreements to yourself is a form or honoring and respecting yourself.

So how about you? Are you more likely to follow through on a commitment to yourself if you’ve written it down? Do you ever give yourself a completion date? Do you believe that honoring your commitments to yourself is a form of honoring yourself?

is not selfish,
it’s vital.”
