23-318 Change Your Beliefs About Money #3

Today’s Mandala Message: What’s Your Why For Making a Lot Money

This week I’m working through Principle #56 “Develop a Positive Money Consciousness”. I set my intention today to ponder why I would want to make money. In an article posted on Teachable.com on limiting beliefs about money by Nicole Quintana-Wolf, this belief caught my attention today: “3. You’re selfish if you want to make a lot of money. There can be a lot of stigma around the desire to get rich—especially if your motivating factor for creating is money. And the truth is, that’s perfectly OK if you want to make money. It doesn’t mean that you’re greedy, selfish, or creating your course for the wrong reason. Shift away from labels and get curious about why you want to make a lot of money, instead”.

She offered this suggestion as a way to dive into this belief: journal what you would do if you were given $1,000,000. “Go into detail here—write about what you would buy and from where, what you would save, and what would be spent on others.” You may find that the way you spend your money may actually have a beneficial rippling effect.

One of my fears about having a lot of money is that I would spend it impulsively and I’d end up the way many big lottery winners do: worse off than before I had the money. Intellectually, I know I would want to be smart about how I spend, share, and save my money. It would require mindfulness and quality support to help me make the most of that money.

But getting back to the question at hand: why do I want to make a lot money? It would allow me to have a bigger studio, one where I would have room to offer classes, workshops, and demos. It would allow me to travel to the sacred sites of the world so that I could expand on my human experience as a spiritual being. It would allow me to help some friends and family members, along with some of my local charities. It would allow me to hire talented people to help me create a more helpful website, as well create supportive videos and podcasts. It would allow me to hire exceptional people to help me manage my day-to-day life. It would also allow me to have improvements made on our home. Overall, it would allow me to expand the ways I can help others.

A good mindfulness practice would be ponder what you would do with $1,000,000.

So how about you? Do you feel it’s selfish to want to make a lot of money? What would your “why” be for wanting a lot of money? What would having a lot of money mean to you and how would it change your life…if at all?

“Wanting to make more
doesn’t mean you’re selfish.
It means there’s the possibility
of expanding your reach
 in a positive way.”
