23-322 Change Your Beliefs About Money #7

Today’s Mandala Message: Evaluate Your Current Money Mindset

This week I’m working through Principle #56 “Develop a Positive Money Consciousness”. I set my intention today to ponder my current money mindset. In an article posted by Wendy Murphy on CleverGirlFinance.com regarding Money Mindset Exercises, she states: “Money mindset exercises are practices that you do to change how you think about money and wealth. Because your perception of money impacts the way you earn, save, and spend it. All of which affect how you manage your finances and build wealth.[they] help you become aware of your thoughts and redirect them. When you practice mindfulness and change your habits, you use new parts of the brain. That’s when the rewiring happens, and you create new pathways in your brain.

As part of this highly informative article, she lists a set of questions for us to answer as a way to help us dig deeper into understanding our current money mindset. They are:

  • How was money talked about in your family?
  • What are your experiences with money?
  • What common beliefs about money have you heard a lot about growing up?
  • How do you view poor people?
  • How do you view rich people?
  • What do you actually believe about money?

Honestly, I could write a 300-page book on just my answers alone. Suffice it to say that money was a huge issue in our household that nobody talked about…they mostly yelled about it. We were always made to feel like we couldn’t afford to spend money and yet the perception of the kids I played with in our neighborhood was that we had a lot of money. Go fig!

I do see the value in answering these questions because I get that most, if not all, of my money mindset was established in my youth, with only a few positive changes since then.

A good mindfulness practice would be to ponder at least one of the questions posed by Ms. Brown.

So how about you? How would you answer these questions? Do you a have a clear picture of your current mindset? Could you benefit from altering that mindset?

“Having the right money mindset
is all about being conscious
of your thinking and choices.
In addition to learning from your
past and present money situations,
you also need to balance this with
compassion for yourself
and an understanding
of where you want to be
in the future.”
