“keeping something or someone safe”
The paradox of our earthly existence is that we seek safety and yet no one is ever really safe. I mean, none of us gets out of here alive. So why do we seek protection? Because we don’t want to get hurt…or die (read second sentence again). The older we get, the more opportunities we have to get hurt in some way, which means we probably shut ourselves down that much more with each hurt.
This also begs the question: what is safe? People have fallen off buildings and lived while other people have tripped and died while walking in the park.
Personal story…About 15 years ago, I went to Connecticut to take ownership of my mom’s car and then drive it home to Oregon. I was about 50yo at the time. My dad hated the idea of me going across country by myself in early November. He was afraid something bad would happen to me along the way, to which I replied “Dad, I call fall in the shower tomorrow and die.” He didn’t have a response for that. In the end, the only way he could be okay with this trip was if I promised to call him every night from my hotel room, which I did…being the good daughter that I was.
Now granted 5-7 days on the road, in an unfamiliar vehicle, by myself presents a greater risk of something bad happening than taking a shower…especially as it turns out, three of those days on the road required me to drive through snow storms…without snow tires or chains. And thankfully, with the help of my guardian angels, I arrived home safe and sound. But I digress.
Today’s mandala encourages us to be more discerning with the idea of protection. What are we protecting and why? What do we need protection from and why? Is the need for protection legitimate or convenient? Is the excuse of protection keeping us from fulfilling our true potential or is it genuinely an issue of some form of safety?
How about you? Do you value protection?
joyfully,
Maureen

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day
Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
