24-039 Fairness

“the quality of treating people equally or in a way that is right or reasonable”

One saying I’ve heard a lot of over the years is “life isn’t fair”. The Rolling Stones’ song “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” sums it up musically. Then there’s that awful (imho) adage: “All’s fair in love and war”…and if you’ve ever watched a season of Survivor you would see this played out on practically every episode.

That being said, while it may be that unfair things happen to us, we, on the other hand, always have the opportunity to offer fairness to others. The question become: what’s fair? And who get’s to decide and how?

Years ago I saw a TV program where there was one piece of cake left and two kids wanted it. The adult, trying to be fair was about to cut that piece in half. The kids stopped the grown-up explaining that one of them preferred the icing and the other preferred the cake. By listening to the kids, the cake was then “fairly” divided. Personally I would have wanted the whole piece but would have settled to split the piece in half.

It seems to me that a key component to fairness is open communication and negotiation.

I wanted to discuss so much more on this issue, but to be fair to the message of today’s MotD, I left it as is.

How about you? Is fairness a core value for you?

btw…here’s what it looked like before:

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day

Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
