24-050 Complexity

“the state or quality of being intricate”

I first discovered mandalas 25 years ago in the three different coloring books I bought, all by the same artist. Up until then I felt like an artist without a subject. As soon as I opened the first book, all sorts of switches turned on in my software engineering head. “This is it!” I thought, “this is what I want to color!”

I brought the books home, I colored the first few, and then I was bored…they were too simple for me. I wanted something more complex. That’s when I first heard a voice other than my own in my head. It said “well, then…create your own”. In less than a year, that’s what I did. I created mandala designs that I wanted to color. The more complex they became, the more creative I became.

About 10 years later I discovered hyperbolic tessellations (from an MC Escher exhibit) and that raised the level of complexity of my mandalas even more. While complexity may not be a core value for me, it is something I value in my art.

How about you? Is complexity a core value for you?

BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with:

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day

Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
