Achievement

”a thing done successfully, typically by effort, courage, or skill”

In my 70 years of being on this planet I have achieved a lot, which at first glance at today’s value word I didn’t realize by how much. I don’t often look back on what I’ve done because I’m mostly thinking about what’s next to be done. And of course it all depends on context and how one measures success. In general, my attitude tends to be: ok, I did that, now what.

This makes me realize how little I celebrate my successes…and just now I realized why…it’s because it’s not enough. Enough of what, though. That is the question. With each achievement, I’d had this barely noticeable internal thought…”maybe this is enough for me to be ….what? accepted? liked? appreciated? loved?”

All my life, especially in my youth, I was indoctrinated into believing that nothing I did was good enough…which I translated into: I wasn’t good enough…I was not enough. I can’t believe I’m still dealing with this issue. When is it enough? When am I enough?

Wow…that went way off topic. I’m sensing that a worthwhile exercise for me to do would be to list my achievements and then celebrate each one in some way. Maybe saying to each one: “Because I achieved ________, I am enough.”

Which leads me to the mantra: “I am enough, just as I am”.

How about you? Is achievement a core value for you?

BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with:

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day

Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
