Athleticism

”the combination of qualities such as speed, strength, and agility”

The traits that make a great athlete can also be traits we can use in our day-to-day lives. We may not need to be the fastest, strongest, or the most agile however some form of each could be of value.

In the late 80s I started running. I was in my early 30s at the time. I forget what inspired me to run; it may have been my coworkers. As I became stronger and faster with running, I began running 5ks and then 10ks. I mostly competed against myself because I realistically knew that my chances of winning any of these races were between nil and zero.

Then in 1988 I set my sights on running the L.A. Marathon. In the process I hurt my leg and had to put it off for a year. For the one in 1989, I trained for nine months with my neighbor. We had a schedule and a regimen that we followed religiously. Without any of that, I know I would not have been able to finish the race.

With running, I became stronger, faster, and lighter on my feet. I loved how it made me feel…especially after I finished a race…and most especially after completing the marathon. Running also inspired discipline and tenacity…both of which help me to this day with my art projects and my Mandalas of the Day.

As for running…I stopped doing that after that one marathon…now I walk…which also involves speed, strength, and agility.

How about you? Is athleticism a core value for you?

BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with:

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day

Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
