Purpose

“an intention to achieve a long-term goal that is both personally meaningful and makes a positive mark on the world”

”What’s my purpose?” is probably the most often asked question of me when people come for a reading. I quite simply answer that for all of us, it is to determine or figure out what it is we love to do—the thing that makes our heart sing—and do that in such a way as to help other people…either alone or collaboratively. If you’re unsure, start paying attention to how you feel as you do whatever it is you do on a daily, weekly, monthly basis. What feels uplifting? What leaves you feeling heavy or weighed down.

Our challenge becomes figuring out what that “thing” is…and it could be that there are multiple things that qualify as our “thing”. For instance for me I love 1) creating mandala designs for others and myself to color, 2) creating and painting mandala art, and 3) doing intuitive readings for people that include creating some form of mandala.

I also love performing (singing, playing piano, doing improv, acting) in front of an audience. So how do I put this all under one umbrella of a purpose? I’m still working on fine tuning it…for now I see my purpose as inspiring and encouraging curiosity, and play in creative ways.

Why even have a purpose? Technically you don’t need one, although even if all you want to do with your life is to go as the spirit moves you…that can actually be your purpose.

What purpose does a purpose serve? It helps to keep us on track or focused on our objective. As opportunities come our way we can better determine whether to follow through on them or pass on them based on whether they are in alignment with our purpose. Or it may be that an opportunity gives rise to us changing or updating our purpose. It could happen.

If you find yourself in a situation where you struggle to do what you love, see if there’s a way you can incorporate it into your life, work, or home, in small ways. For instance if you love to dance, but are stuck doing household chores or menial tasks, see if you can apply some dance moves while you work.

If you love helping people feel better but the thought of going to medical school weighs you down, see if there are others ways you can accomplish your goal. Do you like to make people laugh? Do you love cooking for people? Do you love decorating people’s homes? Do you love fixing things? There are innumerable ways to help people feel better. Open your heart to all the ways you can do so that make your heart sing.

How about you? Is purpose a core value for you?

BTW…here’s what it looked like before…

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day

Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
