Competence
“the ability to do something well”
Over the years I’ve learned three things about being competent: 1) it takes discipline, 2) it takes patience, and 3) it takes honestly wanting to do what I’m wanting to do…ie. I have to truly care about it.
Discipline: We need to discipline ourselves to put in the time and energy that it’s going to take to be able to do something well. I can think of three things, right off the bat, that I know that I’ve been slacking on discipline: 1) learning how to draw things other than mandalas; 2) renewing my piano playing; 3) learning the French language. I do enough here and there…but it really needs to be on a regular basis. It’s been shown that if we practice something for 10 minutes a day we’ll make greater progress than if we practice for 1 hour once a week. Surely we/I can fit in 10 minutes a day.
Patience: This is mostly about being patient with OURSELVES. Our culture is such that if we don’t get something right way, we drop it. That, if you’re not good enough at it from the start, we might as well fahgettabotit. We’re too hard on ourselves…so stop that! We are encouraged instead to embrace the learning process…especially the “mis-takes”…we actually learn MORE from them in the process than if we got it right every time…because in future, when we do do a mis-take, we’ll know exactly what to do about it.
Desire: This is where we have to be honest with ourselves…especially if we’re struggling with it or we’re spending too little regular time on it. We have to ask ourselves: do we really want to be competent at whatever “this” is? What’s our “Why” for doing “this”? Are we willing to put in the time and energy it’s going to take? Great questions to ponder.
How about you? Is competence a core value for you?
BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day
Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
