Common Sense
“the basic level of practical knowledge and judgment that we all need to help us live in a reasonable and safe way”
Okay…this one’s a trigger one for me. I wish I could tell you how many times my brothers and I had to hear one or both of our parents ask this question of us after we’ve done something that we thought was brilliant but they failed get it: “don’t you have any common sense?”
What the heck is “common sense” when you’re just a kid…with little life experience, limited knowledge, and a minimal sense of “good” judgment? For me it was always a guessing game with the ‘rents because it was never really clear to us (obviously).
For that, though, I can give them credit because it put me in a position where I needed to use more of my intuitive senses, along with my regular senses, in order to discern whether what I was about to do qualified as “common” sense or not.
Now, I get it, seven decades later. But here too my sense of common sense may be different from other people’s sense of common sense. For instance, to me it’s common sense to be kind to people, to act with integrity, and to live by the golden rule. I also know that common sense takes being present and mindful…because what may be common sense in one scenario would not bode well in another. Does that make sense?
How about you? Is common sense a core value for you?
BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day
Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
