24-192 Respect for Others

abstract background with colors of off-white and teal along with spots of maroon and pale green. on top in white ink is an outline of a right had that is in the process of opening up. in the palm of the “hand” is an outline of a gold coin or medal with a flower mandala on it. from the “medal” are wavy lines with spirals at the end of each.

Respect for Others

“showing regard for their abilities and worth”

This is another of those values that I wish our society as a whole would get into the habit of practicing more often. Regarding today’s mandala, before I even started drawing, I could see a right hand coming up from the bottom of the paper. Symbolically the right hand generally means “giving” and in this case we’re being encouraged to give more respect to others…to be more respectful of other peoples time, energy, abilities, their place in the world, and who they are.

To be clear, this doesn’t mean we have to like them or agree with them or even hang out with them…it just means that we acknowledge them for where they are and what & who they profess to be.

For instance, I see a whole slew of other mandala artists online. While their style and approach are different from mine and maybe not something I would display in my home, I respect the art that they create and their ability. If anything I see them as inspiration…the open my mind to other possibilities.

The same with music…I know of many popular performers whose songs or singing style are different than what I like to listen to, yet, I can still appreciate that they are super talented.

And just because I prefer doing things in threes, I’ll bring up sports as another example. Just because I personally abhor the sport of boxing, I can appreciate the skill, training, and focus it takes for someone to be a champion boxer. Now that I think about it, when my dad was in young, he took a “stab” at becoming a boxer. Unfortunately for him, life happened and propelled him into a different direction.

In essence, today’s MotD encourages to forego disrespecting others just because their opinion, their life style, their talents, etc. are not to our liking. Instead, it helps if we can go into observer mode, to objectively regard the worth and abilities of others.

How about you? Is respect for others a core value for you?

BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day

Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
