Productivity

“the measure of how efficiently a person completes a task”

Today’s MotD begs the question: how can I do ____________ more efficiently? I look around my cluttered room and instantly feel overwhelmed, thinking it’s going to take FOR-E-VER to declutter it.

But now with today’s question, it gives me a different perspective…it becomes more of a game-like challenge: how COULD I declutter my room more efficiently…so that I doesn’t take FOR-E-VER? The answer that pops into my head says to pick a starting point and then systematically work my way around the room. Yeah…I think I could do that. In fact I’m going to make that my OITH (order in the house) task today.

This question can apply to anything…Is there a more efficient way to do things? It almost feels like with this approach, this perspective, procrastination becomes less of an issue because now we’re focused on “how” of the task versus the “what” of a task. The “how” changes our point of view to that of “I’m moving ahead with this task”. While focusing on the “what” seems stagnant.

For instance if we were wanting to write a book and we’ve been putting it off or only working on it once in a while, the “what” of writing a book can seem daunting. I know for me my inner critic would show up with all kinds of self-doubting, self-sabotaging comments. But if we focus on the “how to make it more efficient” question, then we’re looking at ways to make it easier to work on the book. Maybe we make sure our workspace is clear of any distractions at all times, we set up boundaries, we buy an ergonomic chair, we set up calendar reminders, we incorporate “do not disturb” signals both physically and electronically, we set up a system where on odd numbered days we do research and on even numbered days we write, and so on.

Something about focusing on the “how to be more efficient or how to make it happen” versus the “what” gives us the little bit of motivation we need to make the “what” happen…it moves us forward.

How about you? Is productivity a core value for you?

BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day

Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
