Expectancy
“the feeling or hope that something exciting, interesting, or good is about to happen.”
Do caterpillars know that they will someday become butterflies? Or is being a caterpillar all they know? I suspect they don’t know and here’s why…because it’s all about being present with who and where you are.
Imagine how frustrated a caterpillar would be knowing that they will become beautiful, flying creatures with the freedom to fly wherever they want to go…but instead they are “stuck” on the ground with limitations while in tubular bodies that slowly inch along, in not-as-attractive bodies (of course that’s a subjective opinion).
On an instinctual level, they know that at some point they’ll know when to stop, become a cocoon, “cook” for a bit, and then transform. In the meantime, they are being a caterpillar, living a caterpillar life, with an instinctual expectancy of something on the horizon. But for now…wholly present as a caterpillar.
How does this all translate for us? On some level we know that there is something greater awaiting us, something transformational that, for now, is on hold, in the background, being processed on other levels outside of our awareness. If we focus too much on the “I don’t want to be here, I want to be there” mindset, we’ll create a miserable “present” life for ourselves…with much disappointment when things don’t go as we expect or want.
How do we have expectancy while minimizing the disappointment?
- we establish the “what”
- we become clear about our “why” (is it ego-based or heart/soul-based)
- set our intention for this “what”, adding “this or something better” to the intention
- let go the “how”
- keep doing what seems like the next step to take
- pay attention to “signs” leading the way
- be open to course corrections or “what” modifications
- be ok with “cocoon” moments of time
- most importantly, allow ourselves to soar like the ones we are meant to be…by releasing any-and-all limiting beliefs that keep us from our “what”
All of this requires us to be present with the “now”.
How about you? Is expectancy a core value for you?
BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day
Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
