Heroicness
“the quality of being courageous, noble, or self-sacrificing in behavior”
Whenever I think about anyone being heroic, I’m immediately brought back to my childhood and the Cowardly Lion (CL) from “The Wizard of Oz” movie. Back in the day, that movie would air on TV around the same time each year. Then throughout the next week all of us kids at our bus stop would re-enact it. I always played the CL…mainly because I was afraid to confront the person who always had to play Dorothy. Thankfully, I worked through a lot of this issue years later in therapy.
Here’s the thing about the CL…because his quest and helping Dorothy became more important than his fear, he was able to demonstrate his courage, his nobility, and his self-sacrificing ways. It turns out…the very thing he was seeking, he already had.
He’s reminding us that we too can override our fears, by making our quest be more important than our fear(s). As Susan Jeffers, PhD wrote about in her book “Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway.”
One way we can do this is to rename our “fear” as “excitement”. For instance…
- I’m afraid to look for a new job => I’m excited to look for a new job
- I’m afraid to speak in public => I’m excited to speak in public
- I’m afraid to move out of state => I’m excited to move out of state
So, acknowledge the fear, take a deep breath, turn it into excitement, and then go for it.
How about you? Is heroicness a core value for you?
BTW…I forgot to take a before photo. oh well…
joyfully,

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day
Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
