Dependability

“the quality of being able to be trusted and most likely to do what is expected”

Because my mother and neighbors considered me to be dependable, I started babysitting for my younger brothers and my neighbors’ kids at an early age…like about 10 or 11 yo…which is unheard of these days, but back in the 60s it was considered ok. Thankfully I had a successful track record.

When I think of dependability, I think of my car. I like knowing that every time I go to drive it, it easily starts up, it goes when it’s supposed to, it stops when it’s supposed to, and so on. When it doesn’t, my life is disrupted and plans go out the window.

When interacting with others, we’d like to know that they are dependable, that we can count on them to do what they say they’re going to do. And just as important, or maybe more importantly, that people can count on us to do what we say we’re going to do.

When interacting with ourselves, do we do for ourselves what we say we’re going to do? Can we trust ourselves to do what we say we want to do? For instance if we say we’re only going to have a small serving of ice cream after dinner, do we follow through on that or do we opt to having double or triple that amount?…giving us the opportunity to beat ourselves up over later on.

We’re encouraged to pay attention to how dependability plays out in our lives, with others and with ourselves. …Just some food for thought.

How about you? Is dependability a core value for you?

BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day

Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
