Rigor

“the quality of being detailed, careful, and complete”

For the most part I usually operate on a more casual, go-with-the-flow kind of way. In the early days of creating mandalas I used to be extra detailed and careful about them until I started making little mis-takes here a there.

I would panic and think I had to start all over again. But something inside me would stop me, forcing me to take another look at the “mis-take” from the perspective of “how can I make this work just as it is”. Usually whatever “oopsy” I did I wound up being incorporated in or throughout the piece as if I intended to do that…which I do believe it was intended from a subconscious perspective.

Where I mostly apply rigor these days is with creating the 4’x4’ mandalas for the Archangel series, which will end up being 7 Tibetan-styled mandalas representing Archangels who only want to be called by their order number. While my other styles of mandala designs allow for some looseness, the Tibetan style requires precision otherwise it throws off the whole design. And at such a large scale, it usually takes about 4-6 hours over a couple of days just to outline the basic shape of it…the details come later, row by row, section by section.

While it can appear to be tedious and mega-time consuming, for me it’s a journey, a process, and a most gratifying accomplishment. I’m currently creating Archangel #3…and I’ve already seen glimpses of #4 as a vision in my head…which will be more rigorous than the previous three.

How about you? Is rigor a core value for you?

BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day

Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
