Self-Discipline
“the ability to push yourself forward, stay motivated, and take action, regardless of how you’re feeling, physically or emotionally”
Today required self-discipline…the “science projects” in our refrigerator needed to be “terminated”. Neither my husband nor I wanted to do it…we each kept overlooking it and putting it off…without saying a word to each other about it.
It was like that episode in “Everybody Loves Raymond” where a suitcase from their trip was left on the landing of their staircase. Each assumed the other would bring it upstairs without actually saying it aloud. The longer it sat there, the more determined they we NOT to bring it up because that would mean the other person “won”. Come to think of it, I forget who finally took it upstairs. Any couples experience this phenomenon?
Anyway, this week I’m trying out a new routine where I take care of one household task before logging into any of my devices. Standing in the kitchen this morning, I asked myself the question: “what task will I accomplish today”? The energy of the refrigerator jumped out at me like a school kid who frantically raises their hand because for once, they actually know the answer to the teacher’s question. “OOO! OOO! I know! I know!!!!!”
It took every bit of self-discipline to tackle this task…the worst part being cleaning out the containers that were farthest back on the shelves. I’m not proud that we let our fridge get so out of hand…and I’m sure you’re not really thrilled about me sharing this task…but I am proud of myself for taking the initiative to do what needed to be done. Thankfully, listening to some lovely classical music helped to ease the “gag” factor.
How about you? Is self-discipline a core value for you?
BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day
Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
