Perseverance
“the ability to maintain the same energy and consistency through the process of overcoming painful circumstances”
An example of perseverance for me was going to my first therapist every week, decades ago, for three straight years. I went because my then-husband threatened to divorce me if it didn’t…because, clearly something was wrong with me and not him. It literally saved my life. It wasn’t until I finished with this therapist that she let me know that I was suicidal when I first started. She didn’t want to say anything because she didn’t want to plant that seed.
Going to therapy was a painful process and, on some level, I knew it was vital that I keep going. Little by little we chipped away many of the layers of religious indoctrination, extreme family dysfunction, and total loss of self. (BTW…over the next decade or so, I worked with three more therapists…apparently there were more layers to process…actually, if I’m being honest, I have a bit more processing to do.)
By the time I finished that first three years, I was a new person. I moved out, divorced my husband, found a new job, and went back to school to earn my second bachelor’s degree. That degree also took perseverance…three years of working 40hrs a week, going to school at night, and doing homework over the weekends.
Essentially, perseverance is about making a conscious decision to do something and then having the tenacity to do what it takes to get there.
How about you? Is perseverance a core value for you?
BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day
Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
