Usefulness

“the quality of having practical worth or applicability”

We all have some abilities of practical worth…to varying degrees. Some are very useful, others may seem more like a novelty. For instance being able to balance a spinning basketball on your nose may seem like a novelty and not so useful…and yet it can be quite useful in keeping some restless children entertained at parties.

The operative word in this definition seems to be “worth”…and in this case determining the worth of something being useful or not is whether it’s of value to you and/or others…and therefore, quite subjective. Using the spinning basketball example, it could also be of value to a basketball player in learning balance, ball spinning skills, and concentration.

When I look at some what’s popular in today’s culture, I question the “usefulness” of a lot of it and yet it’s of value to some degree to the masses. Who am I to judge?

All that being said, we are encouraged to take an honest inventory of our skills, talents, and gifts that may or may not seem useful to others but they are to us. As part of this assessment, what are some that may have been dormant for various reasons (usually fear-based in some way) that could be of value to re-ignite…if not in the way you used to do them, maybe revamped in some way.

One of my some-what trivial skills that I’m bringing back to light these days is my “gift” for spacial placement…I’m able to move objects around in such a way as to make them fit into a space not seemingly possible to contain them all. For example, it’s especially helpful with fitting Thanksgiving leftovers into an already full refrigerator. For now I’m using that skill for decluttering and re-organizing our home.

How about you? Is usefulness a core value for you?

BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day

Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
