Thrift

“the quality of using money and other resources carefully”

When I think of thrift, I immediately think of thrift stores and treasure hunting. While I save money thrifting, technically I’m spending money that I probably could use for more appropriate necessities…like art supplies…oh, and food.

My parents grew up during the depression so when I was growing up, even though my dad was able to provide for us (mom and four kids), he had a thrifting mindset. Rarely did anything go to waste. When the milk bottle (at that time milk came in glass bottles) was down about half way, he’d add water to it. Paper napkins were cut in half. He’d even have us wash the wax-coated paper plates in summer. Working in construction, he often brought things home from demos that he would repurpose either in the house, in the yard, or in his shop.

He was quite the inspiration although at the time I thought he was crazy. As an adult I get it. My challenge now, though, is that because I keep (hoard?) a lot of stuff with the intent of making use of it for something else some day…our home and garage are overflowing with STUFF.

In the last two weeks I’ve begun to declutter different areas of the house and I’m finding it difficult to let things go…I may NEED them someday. So while it’s a good practice to use our money and resources carefully…moderation is key.

How about you? Is thrift a core value for you?

BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day

Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
