Newness
“the quality of being recently created or having started to exist recently”
There’s something to be said for new things especially when they are innovative and improve the quality of life. This includes new ideas, new ways of thinking, and new ways of learning. For instance I’ve been around long enough to remember when phones were on the wall or desk and they required you to literally dial them in order to make a call; and phone number started with letters. For a while there, we also had a “party” line…and no…it was not a party…it was a shared line. We also didn’t have answering machines, call waiting, or voicemail…but we did have busy signals (google it).
I’m amazed by the advances of technology and how it has helped broaden our horizons, opening us up to new-to-us cultures, peoples, and ways of existing on this planet. It’s helping to open our minds and hearts to different perspectives. So yes, newness and the quest to strive for more newness can be a positive thing.
And yet, there’s also something to be said for things that have stood the test of time, like kindness, the golden rule, and doing things for the sake of the greater good. I remember a time when things were made to last because they were made with quality: both skills and materials…when most homes and furnishings were built with such things as real wood with real hardwood floors…now they’re mostly found in high-end homes.
I remember when traveling by plane meant that we had plenty of seat room and we were served hot meals on real plates with real flatware. It was considered a special treat to fly…we actually dressed up for it. Sadly the newness of flying as worn off with the industry cutting back on everything that made it a delight. (IMHO)
The word “newness” is another one of those neutral words…it’s neither good nor bad…only we can determine for ourselves whether something is “new-and-improved” or not.
How about you? Is newness a core value for you?
BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day
Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
