Consideration
“the act of thinking about something or someone with care”
It’s interesting…yesterday’s MotD focused on caring for someone or something. Today we look at “thinking about someone or something with care”…in other words…being considerate of someone or something.
From an early age, it was drilled into me, much to my dismay at the time, that everyone else’s needs come before mine. If there was just one cookie left, I was to make sure someone else got to have it instead of me…my needs didn’t matter. I don’t think that’s what my parents had intended but that’s how it came across. For the longest time I held onto that limiting belief until I began therapy and devoured anything and everything about co-dependency…in my case “flaming” co-dependency.
For a while there, the pendulum swung completely the other way where I made sure MY needs were met first and foremost without any consideration for others. Thankfully, I’ve toned that down a bit. Nowadays I swing just a little to the left or to the right of being considerate and not considerate.
It definitely flares up when I detect other people being what I think is inconsiderate…my wounded (self-righteous) inner child cries, with angst, “why are they being so inconsiderate…I’m being considerate, why aren’t they?…it’s just not fair”. To which I hear my second therapist’s voice say “because you can and they can’t…it’s not in their awareness to do so.” To this day, I find it just as annoying as when she said it to me the first time. I get it…but it’s still annoying.
Anyway, if you’re still here, thanks for putting up with my whining. All we’re being asked to do here, is, whenever possible, before we’re about to do something, take an extra moment think about what we’re about to do…with care…will this action be of benefit or a detriment…all the while maintaining a healthy inter-dependency versus a debilitating co-dependency.
How about you? Is consideration a core value for you?
BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day
Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
