Sociability
“the quality of enjoying spending time with other people”
Just this morning I woke from a dream where I was at a big conference at a fancy resort. During the meet and greet portion of the event, I, as an observer and not a partaker, saw pods of people hanging out, talking up a storm. I felt like I should walk around and talk some of them. Then I saw someone I knew but as I got closer to them, they turned their head and then walked away. I’m not sure if they did that intentionally or if it was purely coincidental. Either way, the whole scene felt the opposite of sociability. I’ll need to explore the significance of this dream later.
In reality, if we can really call our awake state reality, I do enjoy spending time with other people, usually in much smaller numbers…and I admit, I’m a bit particular about with whom. My criteria is pretty simple, though: like-minded (but open to pushing the envelope a bit), friendly, considerate, and having a great sense of humor.
As for large gatherings, I’m actually okay with it. I usually hold back at first to assess the situation. If I sense an opportunity to have a conversation, I’ll do so. Although recently we were at an event of about 50 people or so and we felt totally out of place. We stayed for maybe an hour, said hello to a couple of people we knew, paid our respects to the hostess, and then politely left. Most of the people there were families with younger children, all of them seemed to know each other…we were old enough to be the grandparents of said children. I suppose we could have made an effort to talk to some of them but quite frankly, we didn’t feel that sociable…so, we were ok with leaving.
How about you? Is sociability a core value for you?
BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day
Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
