24-273 Belonging

MotD 24-273 Belonging — after. abstract background that looks like stormy clouds either moving into or out of the way of the sunny golden sky. Colors of purple, yellow, white, beige, sepia, and cream. on top in purple metallic ink is a large circle to the lower left. around the outside are 10 ankhs joined together to look like people or beings holding hands in a circle. in the center is a much smaller circle with lines connecting to the larger circle…like spokes in a wheel. It also looks like the back of a hand-held indigenous drum.

Belonging

“being part of something bigger”

When I saw this word today, I immediately thought of Brené Brown, who talks a lot about us needing, wanting, and/or creating a sense of belonging. She shares different components of belonging of which the one that stands out the most to me is “belonging versus fitting in”.

She states that belonging is about being authentic and true to yourself, while fitting in involves changing who you are to be accepted by others. Belonging comes from being accepted for who you truly are, while fitting in requires adaptation to outside expectations.

To truly be our authentic self, though, requires a certain level of self-acceptance, self worth, and vulnerability…as well as creating an environment where others can feel safe to be their authentic selves.

The key here is being able to embrace and bring to light our authenticity while also being open, empathic, and respectful of others who are doing the same…in community…as part of something bigger.

How about you? Is belonging a core value for you?

BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day

Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
