Consistency
“the quality of always behaving or performing in a similar way”
I’m a big fan of consistency. I like knowing that I can count on “things” being done consistently…less anxiety, less uncertainty, less surprises. So when I see something that says it’s “new and improved” my guard immediately goes up…”oh no..I hope they didn’t ruin it”. To those of us of a certain age…remember “new” coke???
The beauty of consistency is that there’s one less thing to think about or accommodate…we can count on it…like the sun. It consistently “rises” every day. I put “rises” in quotes because technically the sun doesn’t rise, we (the planet) have completed another 24 hour rotation. Even if it’s cloudy or stormy, it’s always there. And while it is consistent, the timing and the location of it is slightly different each day…but even with that there’s consistency in how much it’s different.
For example, the sun rises behind the Heel Stone with its first rays shining into the heart of Stonehenge every summer solstice. In similar fashion, the sun shines its first rays into the mound at Newgrange, in Ireland, every winter solstice.
For me, mandalas are the epitome of consistency…at least the symmetrical ones. I go through phases where I do asymmetrical ones just to break things up a bit. Except for a 4-year break (Jan ‘18-Dec ‘21), I’ve been making a mandala a day since Jan 2017. And I’m already prepping for the MotDs of 2025.
Why do I do them? Mainly because I feel compelled to do them and each year I try something different…styles, surfaces, media, etc. And each year I have a new theme. The first year I would pick a different topic each week (structures, food, jewelry, furniture, homes, colors, light, water, etc) and that week I would search the internet for seven different images that would represent that theme in a circular form…giving full credit to the creator of said image. This year the theme is expressing 366 different core value words into some form of mandala.
Another reason why I do them is because I own the domain name: mandalaoftheday.com and I’ve had it since December ‘16. It would seem wasteful NOT to do a mandala of the day. Next year’s theme is: “out of many, we are one”…you’ll have to wait until Jan 1, 2025 to see what that one is all about.
How about you? Is consistency a core value for you?
BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day
Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
