Discipline
“the quality of diligently complying with established rules and guidelines”
Having attended Catholic schools for ten years (1-10th grade), discipline tended to have a negative connotation for me. The priests and nuns could be quite tough. As intense as it was, I actually had a solid education. But I digress.
These days I attribute discipline to following a daily regimen, which for me is important…for some things. For instance, it’s what keeps me on top of these Mandalas of the Day. It’s what keeps me doing my daily (mostly) 1.5 mile walks. Without some form of structure, though, I tend to lose myself in time-wasting stuff.
As someone who has been part of structured society (school, 9-5 jobs, and such) for so long, I find myself wanting to resist any form of discipline or structure. Without it, though, I’m like water without containment: all over the place…which means by the end of the day I feel like I wasted so much precious time.
I’ve come to learn that I need a healthy balance of free flow and structure. So a couple of months ago I happened onto some videos by Carl Pullein on productivity and time management, in particular is pen & paper ones. He does offer digital options but I need to readily see my daily task list. Essentially at the end of the previous day, in a small notebook, on one page, I write down everything I’d like to accomplish the next day with the important ones listed first. While the notebook is structured, I have the freedom to pick and choose throughout the day which tasks I feel like doing in that moment.
We’re encouraged to establish for ourselves whatever system that best gives us a healthy balance of structure and flow while manifesting for ourselves the goals we want to achieve and the life we want to live.
How about you? Is discipline a core value for you?
BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day
Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
