Emotional Control
“the ability to manage emotions to achieve goals, complete tasks, or control and direct behavior”
One of the main reasons why I never pursued a career in the medical field is because, as an empath, I would either feel sorry for the ailing or injured person or I would be feeling their pain and would just want to comfort them rather than being focused on taking remedial action.
I’m going to be honest here…the one place I lack emotion control the most is with my eating. So that last part of the definition: “the ability to manage emotions…to control and direct behavior” painfully resonates with me. The weird part is, intellectually I know it, I get it, and yet this one part of me (feels like a toddler) just decides “there’s ice cream in the freezer, I’m going to get some”…and off I go. It’s as if it completely overrides (or shuts down) the sane, rational part of my psyche. The challenge for me is to keep from beating myself up over it afterwards. It’s truly a curious thing.
And since curiosity if one of my core value words, it would interesting to explore this part, to get to know it, and maybe help it heal and transform…because this type of eating is wreaking havoc with my weight. Having never birthed nor raised children…how do you “control” a toddler? Maybe the operative word needs to be “direct” versus “control”. How do you “direct” a toddler? What first comes to mind is: “let them think it’s their idea”. Interesting.
With today’s MotD we’re encouraged to explore how our emotions can get in the way of achieving our goals, completing tasks, and/or directing behavior. What emotions in particular are showing up? If you were to converse with this emotion as it relates to this goal, task, or behavior what would it have to say? What does it need/want? Journaling or coloring mandalas are just two creative ways we can unveil the answers to these and other such questions.
How about you? Is emotional control a core value for you?
BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day
Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
