Control
“the power to influence the course of events”
The sign on my bedroom door states:
I’m not a control freak but…
can I show you the right way to do that?
I admit, I do like to control things especially things that directly affect me because I know how I want things done…I’m a bit particular that way. And yes, I do control the TV’s remote control…mainly bc my husband is too slow (imho) with it.
Over the years I’ve learned to release my control over people & things…I’ve realized that I do it out of some variation of fear or insecurity. I’ve come to learn that maybe I don’t have all the answers or maybe there’s a better way than my limited brain can muster or maybe it’s not that important. At the core of my “controlling” is this deep drive to make sure everyone is happy…and that ONLY I know how to do that. Yikes! The audacity of me!
All that to say…when it comes to controlling “the course of events”…what is our intention? where are we coming from? Are we coming from a place of insecurity and/or fear? Or are we coming from a place of love, from our hearts, of wanting to influence things for the greater good of all…AND knowing that with power comes great responsibility.
In reality, the only thing we can truly control is ourselves. Too often we give our power away and let others influence what we should or shouldn’t do. We’re encouraged, therefore, to take back our personal power so that we can determine and influence our own course of events.
Like that scene in “Runaway Bride”, Julia Robert’s character figures out for herself how she genuinely prefers her eggs (she always automatically “preferred” her eggs the same ways as her fiancés’)…which may seem trivial however it was her first step in taking back her power. (BTW…highly recommend this movie…especially for those of us who tend to be flaming co-dependents)
How about you? Is control a core value for you?
BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

joyfully,
Maureen

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day
Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
