MotD 24-338 Satisfaction — after. textured abstract background with bold colors of red, terra cotta, golden yellow, teal, light green, light pink, and white. on top in black ink is a large, outlined circle in the center made to look like a bubble with a compass-like star in it. around the circle are abstract shapes giving the impression they are people who are cheering.

Satisfaction

“the pleasant feeling you get when you’ve accomplished something you wanted to do”

Ok…how many of you thought of the Rolling Stones’ song as soon as you saw today’s word? C’mon…be honest. Naturally, I heard the song as an ear worm the whole time I was drawing today’s MotD.

Well, I hope you do get some satisfaction from what you do or can do…and if you can’t always get what you want…but if you try sometimes you will find…you get what you need. (sorry…I couldn’t resist)

I have to admit as soon as I let go of requiring perfection from myself and what I do, I’ve been experiencing a lot more satisfaction in my life. I’ve even learned to accept “good enough” …unless when buying a used book online…it has to be AT LEAST “very good” or “like new”.

Used to be, that had I drawn the circle the way I did on today’s MotD, I would have been horrified and would have probably thrown it out. I’ve since learned to be at peace with making mandalas that look more “organic” almost as if they’re breathing or in motion. As matter of fact, these days I tend to prefer them this way.

Currently, I’m in the process of redoing the labyrinth in our front yard. Over the last couple of years, I had let it go and all manner of vegetation had taken over…esp blackberry bramble. Over the last couple of months, I (along with some help) have taken it back under my control. We’ve put a lot of work into it without feeling like it had to be perfectly done.

If you watch this short video, you’ll see that the circle isn’t perfectly round, the cement cylinders aren’t perfectly aligned, the bricks are loosely in a curved line, and the ground under the yard fabric is not perfectly flat or even. My mantra through this whole process was and is: it just has to be good enough. And you know what? I’m quite satisfied with how it’s looking so far.

While I’m not suggesting that we have to lower our standards…but really…unless we’re doing rocket-y-science-y stuff or surgery, just how precise does everything have to be in order to achieve satisfaction?

How about you? Is satisfaction a core value for you?

BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day

Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
