Glee

“with happiness or great pleasure”

When I think of “glee”, I’m first reminded of the TV series by that title…and yes we watched the whole delightful series…when it first aired. Secondly, I’m reminded of actually being in our elementary school’s glee club…and how every year we would joyfully put on a show for the parents, teachers, nuns, and priests…yes, it was a Catholic school (grades 1-8…no middle school)…and yes we were allowed to be glee-ful once in a while.

And thirdly, I see, in my mind’s eye, a young girl so happy that’s she’s skipping down the road. The joy coming from her feels so genuine, so true…it makes me wonder…when was the last time I felt like skipping down the road with glee…it just occurs to me that “glee” would be a great name for a dog. How delightful would it be to say “I’m going for a walk with Glee”. Anyway…just a passing thought, I thought I’d share.

I know…with all that’s going on in the world right now, and changing with each passing moment, being gleeful seems like the last thing we’d want to or we’re able to do. And yet…with today’s MotD, we’re encouraged to experience glee, even if only a moment…like biting into a amazing piece of dark chocolate.

To those of us who may find “being gleeful” a challenge, a good place to start would be to observe children blissfully at play…or watch videos of laughing babies…or watch dogs (in person or via video) as they are so thrilled to chase after thrown balls and returning them to their owner, excited for the ball to be thrown again. In other words, babies, children, and dogs are a great references for expressing glee.

As we go through the hustle and bustle of this time of year, take a moment to experience some happiness…in whatever way feels best for you.
