Eloquence
“the quality of delivering a clear, strong message”
A high school memory came to mind with today’s word. It’s been a while since I’ve even thought about it. I took a typing class…yes we really had typing classes in H.S.…on real typewriters. Our teacher, a little, old man—at least to us, he was old, fastidiously and methodically drilled us on developing our skills.
He did his best to keep us in line. His biggest problem, at least in my and my classmates opinion, was his breath. We always wanted to do our best because otherwise he’d come talk to us and practically knock us out every time he opened his mouth.
We all talked amongst ourselves about it and yet none of us wanted to say anything to him because we didn’t want to hurt his feelings, embarrass him, or possibly get into trouble.
Then one day, a sample bottle of Scope mouthwash arrived at our house. My parents let me bring it to school for our teacher. That day in class he had stepped out for a few minutes. I stood up and showed the class what I had in my hand…they all laughed and egged me on.
I quickly stashed it in the top drawer of his desk. Then it was just a matter of waiting for him to find it…which he did. God bless him, he took it well. He made us all laugh and he apologized, not realizing that he had a problem with his breath.
Sadly, within a week or so, he either stopped using it or it wasn’t strong enough anymore. Oh well, it was worth a shot. The beauty of it was, we gave him a clear, strong message without anyone getting into trouble and anyone having to be the one to tell him directly to his face…I mean…who would want too?
With that, we’re encouraged to find ways to be clear in our messaging and to deliver it in such a way as to come from a place of strength while creating a positive experience for everyone involved.
How about you? Is eloquence a core value for you?
BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

joyfully,

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day
Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
