Emotional Awareness

“the ability to now when feelings are present in ourselves and others”

All I kept hearing in my head while drawing this out was “know how to read the room”. How often have we done or said something that, had we paid attention to those around us, we would have known NOT to do or say what we just did. Too often we get wrapped up in our own little world that we fail to recognize what’s going on just outside our bubble.

All it requires of us to be emotionally aware is to switch gears from ego mode to observer mode…where we shut down the babbling brook of our internal dialogue and just notice…notice what people are doing and saying…are they active or still? Notice facial expressions…are they grim or cheerful. Notice the energy in the “room”…does it feel heavy or light or neutral?

By being emotionally aware of others, we gain valuable insight as to how best to help…for instance offering support, saying something funny, giving them some space, giving someone a tissue, giving someone an hug, and so on.

By developing this ability we also attune ourselves to our own feelings, which can help us become more aware of what we need in that moment…and then, of course, following through. Actually, an excellent practice would be to ask ourselves all throughout the day “what am I feeling right now?”

For me, right now, I’m feeling a bit anxious because I’m thinking of my to do list and how I’ve barely made a dent in it and it’s already noon. Hmmm…what do I need? Breathe, relax the muscles, and editing the list.

How about you? Is emotional awareness a core value for you?

BTW…here’s what it looked like to begin with …

About the 2024 Mandalas of the Day

Each day I will create and post a mandala inspired by one of 366 “value” words chosen randomly. The objective being to discover for myself which ones would best represent my core values…and by doing so, I hope it inspires you to determine your own.
