Baby Steps

This week’s theme explores the power of action as part of our healing journey. I know yesterday I talked a bit about baby steps focusing on how willing are we to take baby steps. Today we’re taking a slightly different approach to “baby steps”. Breaking situations/problems into manageable bite-size steps.

Whenever we’re faced with overwhelm in any area of our lives, stop for a moment and step back into observer mode (just the facts, Jack). From this mindset we can better assess the situation and see what truly needs to happen right away and what can be put off for a bit.

That’s how I handle cleaning out our refrigerator. I tackle one shelf or drawer day. Takes me about 10 minutes. In a couple of days, it’s all done…and I can open the fridge door again without dreading it.

In the case of making personal changes, we can break that down into smaller actions as well. For instance, if we wanted take better care of our teeth, we might start with flossing only a couple of teeth each day, building up over time to flossing all of them. Or if we’re wanting to declutter a room, we might start by doing one small area of it at a time … or set a timer to declutter for 15 minutes each day. Or if we’re wanting to change our food plan, we could start with not eating after 7pm or instead of eating three slices of pizza for dinner, cut back to two…and eat slower.

Ideally, breaking things down into smaller chunks makes it easier to do a little bit at a time each day…giving us a more fulfilling sense of making slow and steady progress.

How about you? What’s a major task or situation that you can breakdown into smaller steps? What changes do you want to make in your life that could be done in smaller chunks on a daily basis?

BTW…Here’s the before…the front and back view of today’s puzzle piece and the pretty ceramic box that holds all my numbers from which I randomly choose each day’s puzzle piece number:

ABOUT THE 2025 Mandalas of the Day

Throughout the year, I’ll be building one large (48”x48”) Tibetan-styled Mandala one piece at a time…one puzzle piece at a time, that is. The mandala design and the reversed puzzle side were printed on artist-quality watercolor paper. The forward facing puzzle side was printed on a 48”x48” wood panel.

Each day, at random, I’ll be painting in watercolors one of the 365 watercolor puzzle pieces, that by the end of the year will become Archangel Mandala #4. Read more about the Archangel Series. The word/message for each piece will be inspired by Melody Beattie’s book “52 Weeks of Conscious Contact”.

Ultimately, the message of this mandala is about how we are all uniquely part of the one.
