25-164 Stages of Grief

Mandala of the Day 25-164 Stages of Grief — after. painted front side of Puzzle Piece No. 117 with colors of blues, greens, magenta, and orange

Stages of Grief

Our focus this week: “Good Grief”. Today’s MotD reminds us of the five stages of grief as described by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. While these are the norms, we may also experience some unique stages of our own such as guilt (ie: how could I have let this happen?) or low self-esteem (ie: I must be a terrible person for this to happen to me). Whatever it is, whatever stage we find ourselves, we’re encouraged to allow ourselves to be present with it as part of the healing process…and how ever long or short it takes.

Our challenge becomes realizing that by going through the healing process, it doesn’t’ mean we won’t miss whomever or whatever we’ve lost…it just means that we can move forward with our lives while still missing them.

In remembering the people, pets, and things I’ve lost over the years, I recognize the stages I went through. Some were short, some were much longer. Knowing about how grief works and its stages has helped me through the healing process…especially knowing that I don’t or won’t have to feel like this forever.

How about you ? Are you aware of the stages of grief ? Looking back, do you remember how it was going through each stage ? Were you and are you able to move forward while stilling missing who/what was lost ?

BTW…Here’s the before…the front and back view of today’s puzzle piece and the pretty ceramic box that holds all my numbers from which I randomly choose each day’s puzzle piece number:

ABOUT THE 2025 Mandalas of the Day

Throughout the year, I’ll be building one large (48”x48”) Tibetan-styled Mandala one piece at a time…one puzzle piece at a time, that is. The mandala design and the reversed puzzle side were printed on artist-quality watercolor paper. The forward facing puzzle side was printed on a 48”x48” wood panel.

Each day, at random, I’ll be painting in watercolors one of the 365 watercolor puzzle pieces, that by the end of the year will become Archangel Mandala #4. Read more about the Archangel Series. The word/message for each piece will be inspired by Melody Beattie’s book “52 Weeks of Conscious Contact”.

Ultimately, the message of this mandala is about how we are all uniquely part of the one.
