Goodwill Towards Us

Our focus this week — Sep 3–9: “Goodwill”

Today’s MotD: Goodwill Towards Us. Along with wishing others well, we are also encouraged to wish ourselves well. We are just as deserving as everyone else. Our challenge becomes letting go of comparing and judging our goodwill agiants others’ goodwill. If left un-processed it could lead to such hurtful feelings as envy, resentment, and anger. How does that help us ?

What can/could help us is making use of the karmic adage: what goes around comes around. Generally that phrase is used towards something negative way, as in if someone did something “bad”, (we wish/hope) something “bad” comes back on them. What we forget is its opposite: when we wish goodwill towards others, goodwill comes back to us.

I’m sure I’ve told this story before however it seems appropriate to share it here yet again…

Back in the heyday of when the Tickle Me Elmo dolls first came out (circa 1996), they were an instant hit and impossible to find let alone buy. Our local radio station held a call-in auction as a fundraiser for a children’s hospital. One of the items was a Tickle Me Elmo doll. I wanted it.

When the bidding started, multiple callers immediately submitted their bids…essentially it was a bidding war. Eventually it came down to two of us. I held on as long as I could but I couldn’t keep up with the other bidder so I congratulated the other person and folded. When I talked with the DJ afterwards, I told him that even though I didn’t win, I wanted to donate my final bid amount.

Word got out to the person who had donated the doll about my donation. The radio station let me know that the donor happened to have another Elmo doll and that if I wanted it, they’d be happy to let me have it. What !?!? Yes! I gratefully accepted it and some 27+ years later, I still have it…and it still “tickles”.

Now, here’s the thing. As I’m writing about this today (9/6/25), a part of me is trying to guilt/shame me by saying “you know, you should have told them to keep the second doll so they could auction it off thus allowing them to raise even more money.” Wow…that hurts. I’m not sure what to do with this right now. My Inner Self just said “love yourself…you did what you did out of generosity and kindness…you’re allowed to be rewarded for your good deed…go hug your Elmo doll”.

How about you ? Do you compare others’ good fortune with yours ? Do you allow yourself to receive good fortune ? Are you open to adopting the positive version of ‘what goes around comes around’ ?

BTW…Here’s the before…the front and back view of today’s puzzle piece and the pretty ceramic box that holds all my numbers from which I randomly choose each day’s puzzle piece number:

ABOUT THE 2025 Mandalas of the Day

Throughout the year, I’ll be building one large (48”x48”) Tibetan-styled Mandala one piece at a time…one puzzle piece at a time, that is. The mandala design and the reversed puzzle side were printed on artist-quality watercolor paper. The forward facing puzzle side was printed on a 48”x48” wood panel.

Each day, at random, I’ll be painting in watercolors one of the 365 watercolor puzzle pieces, that by the end of the year will become Archangel Mandala #4. Read more about the Archangel Series. The word/message for each piece will be inspired by Melody Beattie’s book “52 Weeks of Conscious Contact”.

Ultimately, the message of this mandala is about how we are all uniquely part of the one.
